I was absolutely delighted to launch The 23 Performance Coaching last week in conjunction with Addiscombe Hockey Club at Monks Hill Leisure Centre. We delivered 3 action packed days of hockey with a different focus on each day.

On Day 1 we looked at individual skill and worked on developing the players elimination skills such as 2D v drags and 3D skills. Day 1 culminated with a timed obstacle course which tasked the players to use all of their new skills under pressure. This was certainly challenging but a lot of fun as well. All of the juniors loved the competition, and all juniors bettered their time on their second attempt!

On Day 2 we looked at attacking skills and goal scoring techniques such as open stick hitting, backhands and deflections. Day 2 finished with the deflection slip and slide which proved to be a camp favourite amongst the players! For those wondering what this looks like head over to our social media channels for some awesome videos!

Onto day 3 and we adjusted the focus to defence. We explored principles around what good defence looks like and spent considerable time looking at how to shave tackle effectively. The progress in this section was great to see with many of the players adding a new skill to their game immediately. We closed the camp with 2 half pitch games where the players could win points for using any of the new skills they had learnt throughout the week. This was another highlight and a joy to watch!

In summary, I think everyone would agree that the week was a resounding success! All of the kids left the camp not only better hockey players but as more confident young people prepared to try, fail and try again. In addition, the children all had an opportunity to play with other juniors who they might not usually play with and hopefully made some new friends.

I would like to thank Dan Heybeard, Mel Bowden, Phil Wise, James Aston, Phil Jackson, Tony Hilton, Tom Nixon, Manika, Claire Messom and Trix and Gayle for all your help coaching across the week. Your knowledge and expertise was a huge benefit to every single junior player. Without your support we would not have been able to deliver such an inspiring experience for the players and I am grateful to you all. I would also like to thank Omega Hockey who supported the camp with awesome stash and prizes throughout the week.

Please look out for future announcements from The 23 on our social media channels regarding future camps and other hockey experiences. We are already beginning to plan for a camp for October half term and are hoping to be able to offer indoor hockey sessions to both juniors and adults throughout the winter. Watch this space!
